How to Apply

First of all, you should get in contact with a potential supervisor. Select one from our faculty members.

Send an e-mail to scholar@nips.ac.jp to ask e-mail address of your potential supervisor.

After agreeing with him/her about your application, please follow the formal procedures as indicated below.

  1. Confirm qualifications for 3-year or 5-year programs.

  2. For 3-year privately-financed students and 5-year privately-financed students who take type (1) examination (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/graduate/applicants/schedule/), prepare formal application form and other necessary documents and submit them to the Sokendai office.

    #Note: For 5-year program, score of English language test is required. The original certificate of TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC score must be submitted or presented on site at the entrance examination. Candidates MUST meet the following standards of proficiency:
    TOEFL (paper-based test) : Minimum overall score of 550
    TOEFL (Internet-based test) : Minimum overall score of 80
    IELTS : Minimum overall score of 6.0
    TOEIC: Minimum overall score of 730

  3. For MEXT scholarship applicants, prepare formal application form and other necessary documents and submit them to your potential supervisor.

    ∇Application for admission: For 2012 MEXT scholarship applicants

    The formal application must include the following:

    1. A completed application form, Study plan in Sokendai, and Inquiry about financial condition/visa application.
    2. A copy of the certificate of your master's degree or a formal letter from the university verifying your completion (or expected completion) of the master's degree course, if applicable.
    3. Transcripts of undergraduate and graduate work.
    4. An abstract of the master's thesis or published papers of the applicant, if applicable.
    5. A list of published papers with the titles and names of all authors, as well as the name, volume number, pages, and publication year of the journal in which the papers appeared, and a summary of each published paper.
    6. A copy of the Alien Registration Certificate (For applicants residing in Japan).
    7. A copy of the applicant's official birth certificate, family register, civil register, or certificate of domiciliary registration issued by the government of the country in which the applicant holds citizenship. (For applicants residing abroad.)
    8. For 5-year program, score of English language test is required. The original certificate of TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC score must be submitted or presented on site at the entrance examination. Candidates MUST meet the following standards of proficiency:

  4. For 5-year privately-financed international students who take type (2) examination (http://www.nips.ac.jp/eng/graduate/applicants/schedule/), prepare formal application form and other necessary documents and submit them to your potential supervisor.

    ∇Application for admission: For 2012 privately-financed international students

    The formal application must include the following:

    1. A completed application form, Study plan in Sokendai, and Inquiry about financial condition/visa application.
    2. A copy of the certificate of your master's degree or a formal letter from the university verifying your completion (or expected completion) of the master's degree course, if applicable.
    3. Transcripts of undergraduate and graduate work.

    6. Payment of a ¥30,000 non-refundable application fee.
    7. A copy of the Alien Registration Certificate (For applicants residing in Japan).
    8. A copy of the applicant's official birth certificate, family register, civil register, or certificate of domiciliary registration issued by the government of the country in which the applicant holds citizenship. (For applicants residing abroad.)
