Title & Abstract

Title: Perception in context: expectations and plasticity shape the way we sense the world

Abstract: Like most our decisions, perception combines current evidence with a priori knowledge. Based on the spatial and temporal context in which a stimulus is delivered, expectations are generated, and plastic reorganization of brain networks may be triggered. I will present experiments documenting this phenomenon using a combination of three techniques: classic psychophysics, pupillometry (the measurement of non-light driven modulations of the eye-pupil diameter), ultra-high field Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Our findings show that people vary in the extent to which perception is affected by context, and that characteristics of their perceptual performance are predictive of their cognitive styles.
