National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS), in cooperation with the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO), is pleased to announce the opening of the IBRO Advanced School, with financial support from the IBRO-APRC. NIPS is an inter-university collaboration research institute, and is one of the leading neuroscience research institutes in Japan.

1. Outline

The Advanced School will focus on novel methods and techniques in neuroscience research. Particularly, emphasis will be placed on imaging techniques and in vivo electrophysiological recordings. The Advanced School will provide for young researchers an excellent opportunity to experience cutting-edge experimental methods by themselves.

The course of the Advanced School consists of two weeks of practical experiences in the laboratory, together with related lectures. The laboratory experiences will be divided into 2 blocks (the first and second weeks). The course will also include presentation and group discussions.

Language used in lectures and laboratory experiences is English.

All participating foreign students will receive round-trip airfare from a major international airport in their country to NIPS, and a reasonable stipend to cover expenses during their stay. Accommodations on campus will be provided at a reasonable cost.

3. Location

All lectures and laboratory experiences are provided at NIPS. NIPS is located in Okazaki city, which is located near Nagoya city.

Bus service is available from Nagoya airport to Okazaki (which takes about 1 hour.) NIPS has two campus locations, Myodaiji and Yamate.

4. How to apply

The Advanced School welcomes applications from young researchers and junior faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate students (with at least one year of training in a graduate program), in the neuroscience-related fields. Particularly, those who can contribute to neuroscience in their own countries are welcome.

The age under 35 years is preferred. Applicants from the Asia-Pacific region will have some priority.

  3. Statement of Purpose (how you will benefit from attending the summer school)
  4. Choices of laboratory experiences (Please specify the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices for each week) from A1~A7 and B1~B8.
  5. Two (2) letters of recommendation
