ステンセンシンポジウムって何？

　　本シンポジウムは、1992年 生理学研究所（岡崎）にて生理・薬理・生化学の唾液腺研究者が集合した国際ワークショップを基盤に、さらに1994年 形態学分野からA Riva、瀬川彰久両博士を唾液腺研究集会と日本生理学会シンポジウム（高松）への参加を要請したことに始まります。集会の成果を重大視したRiva教授（カリアリ大学、イタリア）は1995年　フローレンス（イタリア）での欧州解剖学会議にあたり、唾液腺研究の祖 ニルス・ステンセン(1638-1686)がここで活躍、葬られていることを記念し、第1回ステンセンシンポジウムを開き唾液腺の構造・機能の関係を明確にしました。さらに基礎研究の成果を臨床応用に連結するため、第2回を1997年カリアリ（イタリア）で開きました。村上らは日本学術振興会からの援助を受け組織委員会に参加しました。この会では、イタリア、日本のみならず欧米各国より解剖学・生理学に加え薬理学・病理学・臨床生理学・臨床病理学分野の唾液腺研究者が一堂に会し、最新の成果と蓄積された知識が擦り合わされました。その後、8年間に新しい知見が蓄積され、第３回が日本で開催され、分泌顆粒の機能形態、経／傍細胞輸送調節、分泌蛋白のプロテオミクス、唾液による化学診断、唾液腺構造分化と機能発現、環境変化に応じた唾液分泌調節の神経機構といった学際的なテーマについて、広く世界より参加者が集まり、日本国内の多くの若手に国際的な場で発表討論していただき、日本人若手研究者に自信と将来が開かれました。また、市民フォーラムを開催し、Stensenの時代の楽曲のリュート演奏会を通じ市民サポーターと交流する機会をもちました。

　第３回から既に１０年の歳月が流れ、いくつかの研究テーマは熟し、次の段階に進もうとしており、萌芽的なテーマだったものが大きく成長しました。形態形成や細胞内Caのホメオスタシス、傍細胞輸送に新たな研究の進展がみられ、システム生物学の応用がようやく開始しました。本会は唾液分泌に関して最先端の基礎科学の知見を臨床医歯科学の応用へつなぐ試みです。第４回も岡崎、日本で開催します。日本文化が最近世界で脚光を浴びております。今回は狂言を市民公開で開催し、科学と文化を楽しんでいただく企画です。

What is Stensen Symposium ?

The First Stensen Symposium was held in Florence 1995. Niels Stensen (1638-1686), his grave is located in the Medici's Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the symposium was dedicated to him. The second symposium was held in Cagliari, Italy in 1997. Recent push from GRC friends (Gordon Research Conference) and the FAOPS in Seoul (Federation of Asian and Oceanian Physiological Societies) made Murakami to organize the third Stensen Symposium at Okazaki in Japan. Fortunately JSPS (Japanese Society of Promotion of Science) approved our application as one of JSPS International meeting series and decided to support.

We have organized a series of small international workshops on salivary secretion at NIPS in Okazaki, Japan, regularly from 1992 to 2000 in relation to international collaborative research project. After several year intervals, the system of NIPS was changed and new conference hall was built in addition to the several buildings for three institutes. Also new international airport (Chubu International AP) was open at the beginning of 2005. The access from airport to Okazaki is now very convenient using a train (Meitetsu Line).

The 3rd Stensen was held at the same week as FAOPS meeting in Seoul, where the symposium for epithelial transport and John Young memorial lecture was held by David Cook, Min-Goo Lee, Anuwat Dinudom and myself. Because Japanese Salivologists have grown and reached retiring age. So we arranged this symposium in relation to the Annual Meeting for Japan Salivary Gland Society (Dec 4th 2016 in Tokyo), in order to relay our experience to the younger salivologists.
