The presentation will review the key elements of the drug discovery and development process of small molecules in the pharmaceutical industry as well as highlight critical issues regarding this process. The role of natural products in drug discovery, with particular emphasis in the indication area oncology as well as the relevance of the maintenance of molecular biodiversity will be discussed.
 The presentation is of general character and addresses both graduate and undergraduate students as well as an interested general public.
