We pursued the time course of the junction formation long years ago and found an intimate relationship with actin cytoskeleton. At the adherens junction (AJ) formation, transmission of the tension generated through the interaction between myosin and actin to the AJ appears to be crucial for its development. The AJ morphology is also regulated by the tension. On the other hand, the myosin accumulation and the tension are reduced at the formation of tight junctions (TJs). In contrast, reducing the tension could help TJ formation. I will summarize our current concept on the junction/actin cytoskeleton relationship based on several examples, including recent findings.
